Minnesotan elected chair of National Organic Standards Board

Winona, Minn.-area farmer Jim Riddle has been elected chairman of the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), an organization created by the 1990 Farm Bill, to advise the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture on establishment and implementation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Organic Program (NOP).

Riddle also chairs the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) Organic Advisory Task Force and was instrumental in passage of Minnesota's organic certification cost-share program.

Riddle has served on the NOSB since 2001 and recently completed a one-year appointment as Endowed Chair of Agricultural Systems at the University of Minnesota. He has authored widely-used handbooks and training manuals and teaches organic courses throughout the world.

Riddle said planned projects for the NOSB include refining the materials review process and helping develop the NOP organic regulations for pet foods, aquatic animals, apiculture, greenhouses and mushrooms.
