A large
proportion of
food sold in
Britain as
organic or as
health-food
contain
traces of
genetically
modified (GM)
ingredients,
according to
a University
of Glamorgan
study. Professor Mark Partridge and Professor Denis Murphy tested 25 products containing soya, using a European Union (EU) approved technique for detecting GM residues. They discovered that ten samples tested positive for GM ingredients, even though eight of these foodstuffs had been labelled “organic” or “GM free”. Indeed, four of these products had GM traces exceeding Britain’s Soil Association limit for organic food, for instance, 0.7% of a vegetarian sausage mix was GM soya.
